Kongsberg and Xpirit
Extending the functionality of complex simulation software
Xpirit enhances the quality of Kongsberg’s simulation software, improves its application life-cycle management, and familiarises Kongsberg with Scrum development methodology.
Norway’s Kongsberg Maritime is a global player in the maritime industry. It is a world leader in the manufacture of instruments for ships – ranging from supertankers to fishing vessels – and drilling platforms, such as radars, sonars and bridge control equipment. For many years, Kongsberg has also been a trendsetter in the development of simulation software for the shipping and offshore industries.
Together with an international team of developers, Xpirit employs its extensive Microsoft expertise (the majority of our staff have been Microsoft Most Valued Professionals for many years) to extend the functionality of the most complex of simulation software. To do this, we use a variety of resources, including 3D tooling, the .NET-framework and C++. What’s more, Kongsberg selected Xpirit because we are a heavyweight in the field of architecture, and were able to play a major role in the restructuring of the software, with the aim of improving its maintainability and facilitating the availability of future versions in the cloud.
At the time, the development methodology employed, Scrum, was not properly embedded at Kongsberg. Xpirit fulfilled the role of coach, proposing ways to fully integrate this technology into the company’s primary manufacturing processes.
